Meet Baby Suckie, Tessa’s pet fish. He and his habitat were a Christmas gift from Aaron and Jessica.
So, about his name. (To clear up any confusion, it’s pronounced bay-bee suck-ee.) It truly is an inspirational story. As in, was inspired by Aaron and Jessica’s fish, a Pleco — short for Hypostomus plecostomus — named Sucky.
(Oh, Aaron. You make parenting so much easier!)
The first time Tessa met Sucky, she raved about him:
“I have a Sucky friend!”
“I love Sucky!”
“Sucky sure does suck a lot!”
{Sidebar: Jessica had a dream that Sucky grew legs, crawled out of the aquarium and was running around their living room. Creepy!}
Being influenced by this fascinating fish with an unfortunate, yet fitting name, it was only natural for Tessa to name her fish after him. For obvious reasons, we try to discourage Tessa from talking about him in public. We’ve gotten looks, and I had to tell the whole story to Tessa’s teacher. So glad she has a sense of humor.
So far, Tessa has come up with two variations of his name: Suck and Suck-Suck. We call him B.S. for short. This fish’s name was destined to be inappropriate.
